The first appointment is 45 minutes and costs $156.55: what happens in it?

You get 45 minutes with Chloe Trace, and most of it is spent watching you move rather than talking about it. She takes the history, asks what you are trying to get back to, then tests how you currently load the joint or the system that is bothering you. You leave with a program you have already practised in the room, not a printout of exercises you have never done.

Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes and cost $135.00. You book one at a time. Nothing on this site signs you on to a package.

What does an exercise physiologist do that a gym program does not?

Exercise physiology is exercise prescribed as treatment, for people whose bodies have a reason not to tolerate a general program. That covers three groups.

  • Injury and pain. A back, knee, shoulder or hip that has settled enough to move but not enough to load normally. The work is graded loading, not rest.
  • Chronic conditions. Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and the long tail of conditions where exercise is part of the medical management rather than a lifestyle extra.
  • Return to sport and performance. Getting back to the actual demands of your sport, tested against them rather than against a generic milestone.

If you are not sure whether your problem belongs here or with a physiotherapist, we wrote a plain comparison: what an exercise physiologist does, and how it differs from physiotherapy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see an exercise physiologist?

Not for a private appointment. You need a referral from your GP only if you are claiming a Medicare rebate through a GP chronic condition management plan, or if your care is being funded through WorkCover, TAC or DVA.

Where in Melbourne can I see an exercise physiologist at Align Health Collective?

In person at Kew, Shop 1, 56 Cotham Road, and at Oakleigh, 37-41 Warrigal Road. Telehealth appointments are available to patients at all five AlignHC clinics.

How much does the first appointment cost?

$156.55 for 45 minutes. Follow-up appointments are $135.00 for 30 minutes. Rebates through Medicare, private health extras, WorkCover, TAC, DVA or NDIS may reduce what you pay on the day.

What is the difference between an exercise physiologist and a physiotherapist?

Broadly, a physiotherapist is usually the first person you see for a new or acute injury, including hands-on treatment. An exercise physiologist takes over when the answer is loading the tissue or the system again, and for chronic conditions where exercise is part of the medical management. Many people see both.

Can I claim exercise physiology on private health insurance?

Most funds pay a benefit for exercise physiology under extras cover. What you get back depends on your level of cover and how much of your annual limit is left, which only your fund can tell you.

Do you see NDIS participants?

Yes, for self-managed and plan-managed plans at the Kew and Oakleigh clinics.
